Average Calculator

Find the arithmetic mean, median, modes, range, sum, and count of a list of numbers. Paste values separated by commas, whitespace, or new lines for a quick statistical summary.

About the Average Calculator

This is useful for homework, repeated measurements, and reviewing a small dataset. Seeing several measures together helps distinguish a typical middle value from a mean influenced by unusually high or low observations.

How Is Average Calculated?

The mean divides the total by the number of observations. The median is the middle sorted value, or the average of the two middle values for an even count.

Modes are the most frequent values. This tool reports no mode when every value appears exactly once.

Mean = sum of values ÷ count
Range = maximum − minimum

Example

For 1, 2, 2, 3: sum = 8, count = 4, mean = 2, median = 2, mode = 2, and range = 2.

How to Use the Average Calculator

  1. Paste or type the numeric observations.
  2. Separate entries with commas, spaces, or new lines without thousands separators.
  3. Check that all entries are valid finite numbers.
  4. Read the mean and supporting statistics.
  5. Compare the mean with the median and review repeated values for modes.

Average Calculator Examples

An odd-sized list

For 3, 5, 10, the sum is 18, mean is 6, median is 5, and range is 7.

Multiple modes

For 1, 1, 4, 4, 5, the modes are 1 and 4; the mean is 3 and the median is 4.

Outliers

The mean is sensitive to extreme values. The median can better represent the center of a skewed dataset, but it does not describe all aspects of its distribution.

Input conventions

Commas separate observations, not digit groups. Enter one thousand as 1000 rather than 1,000. Up to 10,000 observations are supported.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is average the same as mean?

In this calculator, average means arithmetic mean. Median and mode are separate measures.

Can I enter negative numbers?

Yes. Signed decimals and scientific notation are accepted.

What if every value is unique?

The result displays no mode because no value occurs more often through repetition.

Are repeated values counted separately?

Yes. Every entry contributes to the sum and count, including duplicates.

Does this calculate a weighted average?

No. Every observation has equal weight. A weighted average needs a separate weight for each value.
