About the Tip Calculator
The optional rounding setting raises each person’s share to the next whole dollar and treats the added amount as extra tip. This is useful for shared restaurant bills and cash payments. Results are estimates, not financial advice.
How Is Tip Calculated?
The tip percentage applies to the full bill entered. Without round-up, the total is rounded to cents and divided among people. With round-up, each share becomes a whole-dollar amount and the total tip increases accordingly.
Base tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100
Total = bill + tip
Rounded share = ceiling(total ÷ people)
Example
An $80 bill with a 20% tip has a $16 tip and $96 total. Two people each pay $48.

- Enter the bill amount used to calculate the tip.

Tip Calculator Examples
Standard split
An $80 bill at 20% has a $96 total, or $48 for each of two people.
Rounded split
An $81 bill at 20% starts at $97.20. Rounding two shares up gives $49 each, a $98 total, and a $17 tip.
Equal splitting
Every person receives an equal share. Separate orders, different shares, and item-level splitting are not modeled.
Rounding and effective tip
Whole-dollar rounding can make the final tip percentage higher than the preset, especially for small bills or large groups.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I enter the bill before tax?
Enter whichever base you intend to tip on. The calculator does not separate tax from the bill.
How does round-up work?
It rounds each person’s calculated share up to the next whole dollar, then adds the difference to the tip.
Can I use a custom percentage?
Yes. Select Custom and enter a nonnegative percentage.
Why can displayed shares differ from the total by a cent?
A total cannot always split evenly into cents. Without round-up, allocate any leftover cent among the group.
Does this account for a service charge?
No. Check the bill for an included gratuity or service charge before choosing an additional tip.
